As we look back on National Volunteer Week 2024, we are reminded of the invaluable contributions of volunteers across Australia. This year's theme, "Something for Everyone," highlights how diverse passions and talents can come together to make a meaningful difference. 

At Levande Bay Village, we are proud to share the inspiring story of Kaye Hampel. With over 30 years of volunteer service with the Salvation Army, Kaye moved to South Australia from Queensland two years ago and found an instant community at Levande Bay Village. "When we moved to Victor Harbor, I knew I’d be part of the Salvos family here too. They just welcome you," Kaye said. 

Kaye's dedication to giving back quickly inspired her neighbour Lorraine to join in. Now, Lorraine helps out at the Salvos’ community brunch every Friday, serving up to 70 coffees, toasted sandwiches, rolls, slices, and cake. "It’s through our friendship she’s volunteering here," Kaye shared. 

Volunteering at Levande Bay Village goes beyond formal activities. The residents support each other in countless ways, creating a strong and caring community. "When we came into Bay Village, we knew absolutely nobody. Now we have a network of friends here.. Those who live next door look out for each other. If we’ve got extra food, Keith and I love making a meal for one of our neighbours." 

Levande Bay Village  Terri Winn, Village Manager emphasised the broader impact of volunteering, "Volunteering is a fantastic way to socialise, meet new people, and feel a sense of purpose by helping others. When residents give an hour, they get back so much more." 

More than half of the residents at Levande Bay Village participate in volunteer activities, significantly surpassing the national average of 28% for those aged 55 and over. From helping at the local hospital and Meals on Wheels to supporting environmental and wildlife initiatives, Levande residents are making a significant positive impact. 

At Levande, we are proud of our volunteers and their commitment to making a difference. Their efforts embody the true spirit of community living, where everyone looks out for each other and works together to create a vibrant, supportive environment.
