A Shared Love Of Red Brings Men Together

A Shared Love Of Red Brings Men Together

A simple lunch can pave the way for lifelong connections. Led by the residents at Bay Village, the 'Men's Group' gathers monthly to cultivate bonds that grow stronger with every shared meal.

John Weeden, Keith Walter, David Jones, and Chris Garwood collectively oversee 'the Men’s Group,' a monthly lunch for male residents living at Levande Bay Village. The informal lunch offers an afternoon of connection, social engagement, and, for many, a chance to share a bottle of their favourite red wines. Around 30 men attend each event, enjoying a homemade feast.

While the monthly lunch concept originally began six or more years ago, a renewed focus on friendship and social interaction among neighbours after the easing of pandemic-related restrictions and a flurry of new residents moving into the community in recent years had bolstered the group's membership. John said the gathering fostered connection among men living in the retirement community, supported residents to make new friendships, and reduced social isolation.

The successful re-launch of ‘the Men’s Group’ post-pandemic prompted a revitalisation of the social calendar at Levande Bay Village. Demand for social activities for all residents was high – “our partners wanted to come along” – and the inaugural Bay Village happy hour began. First held monthly and then fortnightly, John explained that a happy hour was now held every Friday evening with between 12 and 40 residents in attendance each week.

John said he and his fellow organisers – who came from diverse career backgrounds including business owner, aeronautical engineer, highway engineer, and heavy vehicle driver – themselves shop, cook and serve the rotating menu of meals with the lunch events held in the communal alfresco area and community kitchen at Bay Village.

"We enjoy each others' company and all get on really well...It’s always an afternoon of engaging conversation and camaraderie." - John

“As far as the boys are concerned, it’s helped us a lot. We talk on a deeper level and, particularly for the blokes who served in the forces, it helps them to talk things through.” - John

Levande Bay Village manager, Terri Winn, said the men’s lunch group was a great example of the neighbourly friendships and community spirit among residents at Bay Village. John, who moved to Bay Village in 2017 with wife Trish, said one visit to Bay Village was all it took to convince the couple to move in.

“This fantastic event attracts a mix of different characters who have formed some good friendships and greatly enjoy each others’ company.” - Terri

"Bay Village has always been home to a thriving community of like-minded retirees enjoying their retirement years and initiatives such as ‘the Men’s Group’ create vital social interaction." - Terri
