It Just Felt Right

It Just Felt Right

For Dennis and Margaret, choosing The Cambridge was the result of years of consideration — and in the end, it felt just right.

“We were on and off, thinking we need to find something,” Dennis recalled. “And our kids kept telling us, ‘You need to sign—so find something.’”

Other places didn’t feel quite right, but The Cambridge did. “It definitely ticked a lot of boxes,” Dennis said. The convenient transport links, the nearby aged care facility, and staying close to the area they’ve always called home sealed the deal. Better still, their daughter lives just a short Metro ride away.

Beyond location, the couple quickly discovered the power of community. “In all the gatherings we’ve been to, we haven’t come across a person that wasn’t friendly,” Dennis said. From organised events to everyday chats in the hallways, Margaret says the warmth is genuine. “Everybody says hello. The social aspect means a lot.”

Their advice for others? Don’t wait too long. “Do it together, and do it earlier,” Dennis said. “It just makes it easier to settle in and become part of the community.” Margaret agreed, reflecting on her mother’s more difficult solo move. “Doing it together makes it easier.”

Of course, one of the biggest hurdles was downsizing — a process Dennis admits was painful at times. A lifelong collector, he parted with books, vintage electronics and decades of photography gear. Yet even the toughest goodbyes brought relief. “I get relieved every time I tell someone: I’m getting rid of stuff,” Dennis said. Some treasures even found new homes, like a 1962 tape recorder now cherished by a young music student, and a vintage Apple computer currently on eBay.

Margaret, the more pragmatic of the two, was clear-eyed about the process. “If I haven’t used it in five years — why would I want it now?” she said with a smile.

For both of them, the move has been about more than convenience or even comfort. It’s about stepping into the next chapter with optimism. “We’re all doing the same adventure,” Dennis reflected. “It’s another journey you’re taking — and we’re all like-minded.”
