Why Good Company is the Secret to a Long and Happy Life: Meet Diane

Why Good Company is the Secret to a Long and Happy Life: Meet Diane

3 min read

Oak Grange resident Diane retired at the age of 60 from her job as a medical secretary. Within weeks, she declared “well, this is for the birds!” and went back to work for one of the top orthopaedic surgeons in the state, remaining employed until she was 79. That was the point Diane decided Oak Grange would be the right place for her, and in the last 15 years she hasn’t looked back.

“The company is the best thing I think most would agree,” Diane explains about the community. “I mean, I like time to myself too. But we manage to amuse ourselves here. There’s always something to look forward to.”

This certainly seems true, based on Diane’s standing five o’clock drinks catch up each Saturday night where they rotate whose house they visit. And it’s clear residents like Diane and her friends quickly find joy in the simple things.

The recent photoshoot Diane was involved in (images featured in this article) sounds more like a scene from a teen movie than a group of retirement-aged women being photographed in the local area.

“It was a riot,” Diane explains. The four of them apparently failed to follow instructions because they got distracted by a shoe shop they were passing. And one of their coffees created hilarity as it balanced precariously on the edge of the table as the photographer tried to get the perfect shot.

Diane is clearly energised by the people in the community, and is looking forward to meeting more people who will move in as the redevelopment progresses.

“You’ll find all sorts of people here,” she says. “There are such interesting people here - it really makes your day.”

The changes in the village will also create premium shared facilities, which Diane is excited about. “I think the community centre will be a dream.”

“I’m lucky since Levande has come here,” she says. “They’re making sure we’re looked after, they’ve been brilliant with this redevelopment, there’s not a thing we don’t know.”
